YouFabers, the1940 summer holiday with;e7 know as well as I do the difficulties of writing letters while one is a visitor, though you (with more habituation to that position in the summer than I) (for when in Campden I only wrote business notes) rise above those difficulties better. This will only tell you that I am well and in a very quiet place, that the weather is good and that I am benefiting by my stay. IChristian News-Letter (CNL)TSE gives talk for;b9 was pretty tired when I arrived, afterSt. Mary Woolnoth, King William StreetTSE gives CNL talk at;a1 three weeks of the C.N.L. followed by a lunch hour talk at St. Mary Woolnoth’s, and with the learning to become accustomed to the new situation. IEnglandLondon;h1TSE as air-raid warden in;d5 can only assure you that in London I am in as safe a position as much the largest of the population of the island, and in a safer position than most of those: and beyond that, one’s capacity of adaptation is remarkable. There have been and no doubt will be, times when my duties require my learning to sleep in armchairs; but I should not have to be in the streets when there was any local risk; and indeed there has been none in such parts as I frequent or anywhere near them. ICocktail Party, Thestill a distant prospect;a8 fear that it will be some time before life will be regular enough again to be able to work consistently on a play, however.
The posts are slow here, and both this letter and any from you will be delayed more than usual; so I shall send a wire next week on returning to London. WhenCheetham, Revd Eric;e3 I am there, the person who can best report on my whereabouts at any given moment is the Vicar. I have been chiefly worried by fear of your anxiety, for I read that the German reports sometimes reach your newspapers before ours, and are evidently very imaginative; but you must have learned by now to discount them. For instance, I have seen no damage anywhere. IHale, Emilyholidays on Grand Manan;n5 doCanadaGrand Manan Island, New Brunswick;a2EH holidays on;a2 hope that at Grand Manan the remoteness of communication has not disturbed your rest, and that I may hear that this part of your vacation has been a great success.
This afternoon we go with a party, I believe, for sea bathing and a picnic tea.
