Your dear letter of the 4th arrived yesterday (no. 31) so it would seem that the air service is moving faster with the spring, and I am encouraged to entrust all letters to you to it. ItSecond World Warinvasion of Denmark and Norway;c2 is indeed not the only thing that is moving faster, and the events of the last few days have been the chief preoccupation on one’s mind. For the first time, I think, since September, IChandos Groupdiscusses economics;a6 staid up last night after coming in from an evening with the Chandos Group discussing economics) till 12 to hear the midnight news. It is too soon to estimate the importance of the recent events, which of course are still going on; 1 buttravels, trips and planspossible wartime transatlantic crossings;d7following invasion Denmark and Norway;a6 of course what is always at the back of my mind with such activities is their possible effect, favourable or not, upon my wishes (for they are not yet plans) for next autumn or winter.
IEast CokerTSE on its mood;b3 imagine that ‘East Coker’ was more affected by the events of the last seven months than immediately appears, or than I may have been conscious of myself. I suppose it will seem to some people a sombre poem, but to me it was rather a hopeful one, for the individual spirit if not for society. In any case, it is a kind of interim poem; and the third of the trilogy I may not be ready or ripe for, for several years yet.
Your little visit to the Cape seems to have been a pleasant interlude and possibly pick-me-up; but remembering your visit to Charleston a few years ago I shall not feel assured about your health until the end of the summer term is in sight. I hope too that you will not pick up any of the ailments of this year, such as German measles – an appropriate minor malady for 1940. You have too many duties at both ends of the Easter holiday to allow it to be really restful; and I am glad you have at least formed a resolution to plan a sensible summer. ICocktail Party, The;a6 hope to take a fairly solid holiday myself – a good stretch together: and meditate upon a play.
I’ve'Types of English Religious Verse'prepared for Italy;a2 done'Last Twenty-Five Years of English Poetry, The'written for Italian audience;a2 the'English Tradition: Some Thoughts as a Preface to Study, The';a3 first draft of my two lectures, and nearly completed my article: so the next two weeks will be spent in rewriting the lectures and putting in the appropriate poems and extracts to read. Itravels, trips and plansTSE's abortive 1940 Italian mission;d8itinerary;a6 shall visit some places where you have been and which I have never seen: Naples and Florence – I don’t remember whether you ever got as far as Palermo. But how much I shall have time to see I have no notion.
It’sdogs'Boerre' (Norwegian Elkhound);b7decorated at dog-show;c7 odd, somehow, to think of Boerre being shown and perhaps winning ribbons. I hope that it will not turn his head: I have never known familiarly a prize winning dog, only some of their descendants.
This is a distracting moment of history. But there are times when I feel happy and serene – for one reason, just because you exist.
1.Hitler’s quickly successful invasion of Norway and Denmark had begun on 9 Apr. Denmark was rapidly overrun; fighting in Norway continued into June.
