I will now see whether I can manage a fountain pen. There is no reason why my hand should be unsteadier than usual except the awkward position of writing in a deck chair on the roof. I have that very fine leather portfolio you gave me to write on. The weather has been very warm: Iappearance (TSE's)hernia;b9deferred operation for;a2 have made excellent progress and yesterday afternoon went for a short walk by myself. Were it not for the 2nd operation, which is fixed for Thursday the 31st, I should have been sent home. I shall probably be returned to Chelsea on Thursday or Friday week, as the 2nd operation will be a simpler one. I have not had more visitors than I wanted, except an unknown professor from Beloit College Wis. who wanted to interview me about the future of Protestantism in Europe: and I am trying to find out how he got in.
YouHale, Emilyas actor;v8in Kind Lady;d4 are now in the middle of your production and I shall not expect to hear from you again until the ardours are over – I do not know whether you are to take part in any other play, but if so I hope you will have time and energy to write in between to report on the success of Kind Lady.1 I have no address for you after the 1st September.
