I haven’t time tonight to write you a general letter, or retrospective or of subsequent events since I saw you, as I have just got back late from the Morleys. I may have time tomorrow on returning from Oxford – I hope so, asSmith, Theodora ('Dodo') Eliot (TSE's niece)1935 visit to England;b3taken to the ballet;a1 I have to take Dodo to the ballet on Thursday andSociety of the Sacred Mission, Kelham Hall, NottinghamshireTSE's June–July 1935 stay;a9 go to Kelham on Friday, and shan’t have any time until Monday. When I saw you I had had a specially tiring day before, and I am now feeling enervated after the stimulation of the play. ThisHale, Emilyand Morleys set for ballet;f9 letterMorleys, the;e4 is only to say that I do want you to come up next week to go to the ballet with the Morleys, who would like to see you. Wednesday or Thursday the best nights: I should suggest that you come on Wednesday and stay two nights: I don’t know what ballets there will be, so that would give me the choice of two nights. WeMorrell, Lady Ottoline;f2 might go to see Ottoline on the Thursday. If next week won’t do then the week after (I think the ballet will still be here), but next week better.
Nowtravels, trips and plansEH's 1934–5 year in Europe;b4TSE offers to fund EH in London;e2 you said that you might not be able to afford to come up again. I realise that. But in August there won’t be anything particular to come for; and I shan’t see much more of you anyway; andfinances (TSE's)TSE's desire to pay for EH;b2 I can’t see why you should raise any objection to my paying for your fare. You would, I have no doubt, object to taking money from a gentleman friend for general purposes (except, I hope, in dire need): BUT you don’t object to my paying for a taxi – and a fare is merely the prolongation of a cab fare; AND it would be giving a great deal of happiness; SO there is no possible objection on grounds of principle. Only possible objection is that you didn’t want to come – or didn’t feel well enough – or didn’t want to see the ballet enough to put up with my company.
This may reach you Wednesday evening, and I should be grateful for an early reply, because one must take tickets as far ahead as possible. I must stop now,
I hated to rush off – but by hurrying I just got to the gate in time. I was distressed to find you living so far away with a long walk several times a day. Let me know how you are after it, and in the fine weather.
