After'Edgar Poe et la France';a5 ten days or so during which I was pushing myself to finish my two lectures (one'Poetry in the Theatre'rewritten for Rome;a3 of them to be sure, only a re-written lecture, but nearly all re-written) and'Speech at Aix-en-Provence on receiving an honorary degree';a2 my shorter discourse to the University of Aix, I have at last a period in which to write letters, of which I have many in arrears. OneFluchère, Henritranslating Aix lecture;a5 of the lectures, and the discourse, have to be translated into French, and therefore had to be ready well before the time of my departure: they have gone to Henri Fluchère in Oxford who has promised to do the translations. Itravels, trips and plansTSE's scheduled December 1947 visit to Marseilles and Rome;g2itinerary;a5 haveBritish Council;b4 arranged with the British Council to get me a sleeping compartment from Calais to Marseilles on the 3d December, an aeroplane seat from Marseilles to Rome on the 7th, and an aeroplane from Rome to London on the 16th. I shall be more than thankful when this is over, and when Christmas is over, and I can hope to do some work. Meanwhile, the weather has been very mild for November (and still alarmingly dry) until yesterday, when it turned distinctly colder, and at the same time the electric power system at my office had a fuse, and neither the electric heater nor the lift worked all day.
InAngioletti, Giovanni Battistadinner-party for;s2 other respects, my life has been only the usual round: one rather tiring evening this week, having to entertain an Italian man of letters, G. B. Angioletti, who was formerly correspondent for The Criterion – a small dinner party, rather expensive as dinner parties are nowadays on account of the cost of wine, withSpeaight, Robertstill playing Becket;e5 Robert Speaight and another man to meet him.1 SpeaightMurder in the Cathedral1947 Edinburgh Festival production;g4;a1 is still the Archbishop, having performed the role with success at the Edinburgh Festival this summer, and having done it again on a Television Programme (which I did not see: I have only seen a television machine in operation once, and didn’t like it) the day before. HoelleringHoellering, George M.incommunicado;b4, by the way, the producer of the film, is now in one of his periods of non-communication: I hope that, having finished his weaving of twelfth century materials, and made some progress towards getting all his other twelfth century properties made, he will now set about collecting a cast. I think he is right not to try to secure the services of any stars, but use relatively unknown actors.
It seems a very long time since I have heard from you; and it is hard to conduct a monologue. You know all the questions to which I should like to know the answers, about your life in Concord, your work in Boston, and what you are doing and whom seeing. Your health essentially, and any gain or loss of weight. (I am still very tooth conscious, and hope the dentist can adjust them to stay in more securely in the next week or so). I get rather depressed without news.
1.TSE to Robert Speaight, 4 Nov. 1947: ‘Could you do me the kindness of dining with me on Wednesday the 12th to meet G. B. Angioletti who will be here under the auspices of the British Council. I do not know whether you know him though I am sure you are one of the people he would like to meet. He used to be Italian correspondent of The Criterion and is a very well known man of letters. I don’t think he speaks much English, but I am pretty sure of his French although I have only known him by correspondence in all the years of our acquaintance.’ The identity of the other man at the dinner party is not knownRoberts, John.
