This is the first chance I have had to write a note, and I cannot tell whether I shall have time again during this tour, and probably no access to a typewriter. New York has been pretty stiff, Washington will be the worst. All I hope for is just to get through it creditably – feel utterly tired, rather numbed or half anaesthetised, knowing that great pain is waiting for my return to consciousness. You are always in my mind. I shall write again from Washington if I have the time and strength.
