Dearesttravels, trips and plansTSE's 1938 trip to Lisbon;c9described;a8,
We have just returned from a tour of the North. I am here until the 13th, when I & the French member get a boat for Cherbourg & Southampton. I have seen some beautiful things, and have been obliged, out of politeness, to over-eat to the point of torture. A dinner of 12 courses, 5 or 6 of which are meat, is no joke for anyone but a Portuguese or a Swede. Heeding your advice, I brought some drugs for dysentery etc. but the food is so binding – fish, meat & sticky sweets, with very little vegetable – that one [?needs] quite a different medicine! I will give you a detailed account later. One feels very cut off from Europe here. I long for news from you, & am impatient to return.
Your loving
Tom
Weather is chilly , & a good deal of rain. Country beautiful.
