I rather stupidly postponed sending your birthday greetings yesterday because I did not want them to reach you before the day; and now I am afraid that I have left it so late as to be after the day. But I have had it in mind all the time, and shall have on Thursday all the day. I hope that on this annual occasion I may be permitted to mention (beyond superlatives) my devoted respect & admiration & adoration & love.
