[41 Brimmer St., Boston]
There is one thing I completely overlooked in my last letter. ThatBodleian Library, Oxfordintended repository for EH's letters;a1 is about the Private Papers for the Bodleian.
I think my Lady is either Very Stupid, or else some kind of modesty, which is certainly one of her complete set of good qualities, interfered with the transmission. I only meant (1) hereHale, Emilycorrespondence with TSE;w3TSE exalts as authoritative;a2 are the only documents in my possession which cast any light on my life and work (such as those are), and which also, if I may say so without vanity, show me in a rather favourable light! (2) they are too beautiful in themselves not to be preserved; (3) if I have any reputation left in two generations, I want it known how very very great is, will be and always was, my debt to you. Is that clear?
I had hoped for a letter this morning; but then I suppose I had no reason for hoping for one.
Letter from Sir Michael Sadler enclosed.1
1.Sir Michael SadlerSadler, Sir Michaeldonations to Bodleian via;a1 wrote on 10 Jan. 1931: ‘I am glad to say that it will be all right about the deposit of your confidential papers at Bodley. The Librarian … is inclined to think that 60 years after your death is rather a longer margin than is necessary.’ He went on, probably without intending any innuendo: ‘But, as the papers are probably mostly concerned with young men, I am not sure that I agree with him …’
