Itravels, trips and plansTSE's 1952 visit to Rennes and the Riviera;h7;a4 haven’t much news about myself since I last wrote, but I wanted to get off a line to you tonight, as I fly to Nice day after tomorrow, and shall write no more letters to anybody for a fortnight. Then comes Holy Week, and after that, what with my visit to Rennes, astravels, trips and plansTSE's 1952 visit to America;h8efforts to coordinate with EH's summer;a6 the time of my departure for New York approaches my communications will probably be briefer. But I should like to know roughly what your work is to be during May – whether you will be preparing a play, and whether there is any prospect of seeing you in Boston or Cambridge as well as in Andover, and whether when I see you there you will be immersed in rehearsals.
MyBailiffscourt HotelTSE convalesces at;a1 doctor sent me for the last weekend to a hotel at Littlehampton, an extraordinary place, builtGuinness, Walter, 1st Baron Moyne;a1 by theAmericaCalifornia;d3land of fabricated antiquities;c5 lateAmericaChicago, Illinois;d8land of fabricated antiquities;a6 Lord Moyne for himself but never lived in – entirely put together out of remnants from 15th and 16th century buildings – the sort of transported and fake antique one would expect only in Chicago or Los Angeles – now a hotel run very effectively by a couple of Austrian Jewish refugees.1 It was very comfortable and pleasant, and very expensive. Mysmokingagainst doctor's orders;b9 instructions were to breath [sic] sea air and not to smoke: I carried them out to the letter, or almost (I did smoke one cigarette each night after dinner), and my chest and bronches are very much better for it. I hope that after I have got the lecture over, the ten days visit with friends on the Riviera will put me into still better condition. Rennes will be tiring; but I shall have six days at sea with the excellent fare of the French Line before I have to face the ardours of New York, Washington and Cambridge.
When I get back from Nice I shall work out a rough schedule, I think three days in New York, then Cambridge (the Faculty Club, I expect, can take me in) for I hope twelve days, then Washington for two or three days, and then New York before flying back: I have twenty-three days in all.
I hope that spring is approaching you, and that I may find on my return on April 4th a letter giving a more recent account of your health. IPerkins, Edith (EH's aunt);l4 will write to Aunt E. again before Easter.
ShallAmerican Presidential Election1952;a1 I find people concerned with nothing but the Presidential Election?2
1.Bailiffscourt Hotel, by the beach at Climping, near Littlehampton, West Sussex, was conceived in the 1930s by the wealthy WalterGuinness, Walter, 1st Baron Moyne Guinness, 1st Baron Moyne (1880–1944), at the behest of his wife Lady Evelyn, née Erskine (1883–1939). Designed by Amyas Phillips, an antiquarian and amateur architect, it is constructed in medieval style, using reclaimed materials from around the country: this beautiful fake of a building is now Grade II listed. From 1948 it was run as a hotel by German refugees Emmy Birrer and her husband, Hans.
2.The quadrennial US presidential election was to be held on 4 Nov. 1952. The unpopular President Harry S. Truman withdrew from the race, leaving the running to war leader Dwight D. Eisenhower (Rep.) and Adlai Stevenson (Dem.)
