Itravels, trips and plansEH's 1939 England visit;d5TSE's efforts to coordinate with;a1 have now memorised the fact that you are to be expected on the Aquitania, sailing on June 14th, and suppose that you should arrive on the 20th. AsFlat 3, 11 Emperor's Gate;b3 for where you should stay, it seems to me that if you propose to stop, on this occasion, only in town for a night or two, you might as well have Emperor’s Gate; butSeaverns, Helenhouses EH on 1939 arrival;d3 if you stay in town longer, Millbank would, in the circumstances, be better. I should like you to occupy these rooms, of course, but I should also like you to stay longer; but if you are very tired when you arrive, it might be best not to stop long in London, and I could come down for that weekend. IBoutwood Lectures (afterwards The Idea of a Christian Society)being rewritten for publication;a9 do not intend to leave London for more than a weekend or so, until the end of June, as I want to finish the notes to my Lectures for the printers. IDobrées, thevisited in Leeds;b1 expectUniversity of Leedsconfers honorary degree on TSE;a1 toEnglandLeeds, Yorkshire;g5the Dobrées visited in;a4 go to the Dobrées in Leeds for the weekend of the 1st July, as my degree is on the Monday, the 3d. ISmith, Theodora ('Dodo') Eliot (TSE's niece)and Marion's 1939 visit to England;c1Southwold week;a3 thoughtEliot, Marion Cushing (TSE's sister)1939 summer in England with Dodo;d3Southwold week planned;a6 that after that I might take a week with my family at Southwold, Sussex, where I have the address of a good hotel, and then a fortnight at Campden just overlapping Mrs. S. who expects to be there for the first fortnight of August. WhileTandys, the;b2 Mrs. S. is with you, I might take another week with the family somewhere else, though Polly Tandy doubts whether their house in Dorset would be comfortable enough for Marion – I may have to go down there for a night to find out. But I must wait until next week to decide, until I have corresponded with Mrs. Perkins and learnt when it suits her to have me. Andtravels, trips and plansEH's 1939 England visit;d5TSE's 22–30 August Campden visit;a8 I should be able to pay another visit to Campden towards the end of August.
Anyway, if you spend one or two nights in London on arrival, I CAN come to Campden for the first weekend.
IMagdalene College, Cambridgemakes TSE an Honorary Fellow;a3 go to Cambridge on Wednesday to be ‘received’ at Magdalene.
The Morleys have had misfortunes. OliverMorley, Oliverhas scarlet fever;a8 was taken to the London Fever Hospital with scarlet fever, andMorley, Lilian Janet Birddies;a1 on the same day came the news of his mother’s death in Baltimore.1 This was a kind of relief, as she had been suffering a great deal with cancer for the past year or more, and he had had a good deal of distress over her, of which I will tell you more when we meet. (It is pleasant now to be able to postpone things for conversation!)
So you have just a fortnight more – less, 12 days. I can hardly imagine it.
I shall say: ‘I am glad to see you’.
