to Eleanor Hinkley
Massachusetts, U.S.A.
I wondered afterward whether my letter to Emily was not a bit too severe especiallyEliot, Theresa Garrett (TSE's sister-in-law);h8 in view of something that Theresa said about her some little time ago. It may be simply that her mind was wandering a bit. IfEliot, Esmé Valerie (née Fletcher, TSE's second wife)shielded from EH's importunities;d4 you have any news on this subject please let me know here at 24, Russell Square, as I do not want to involve Valerie in any distress. If Emily’s mind is a bit deranged and she was merely living in the remote past I feel terribly contrite about my letter.
Please do let me hear however briefly.
PS. The letter to Emily and the copy to you yesterday were both addressed by mistake merely to 1, Berkeley Place, Massachusetts. Just let me have a word here at 24, Russell Square if they did not reach you. Those two envelopes contained, one a letter to be sent to Emily and the other a copy of the letter for yourself. <I hope they come back here as dead letters.>1
