to Emily Hale
London W.8]
I was indeed surprised to get your letter of October 2nd, and to learn from it that you were already on your way to England. I cannot help wondering at your taking a cottage in the Cotswolds at this time of year, for I have always understood that the winter could be very severe in that part of the country. You do not say how long you intend to live there, or whether you have any companion to share the cottage with. When you find it convenient to visit London, Valerie and I shall, of course, be very happy if you will have lunch with us. I do not suggest any date at the moment as I am just recovering from a mild attack of Asian ’flu, and am dictating this note to Valerie so as to get it off quickly.
