Stephen Knight was born in Swansea, read English at Oxford University, then studied at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School to become a freelance director. He has worked for over 35 years as a creative writing tutor in schools, colleges, The City Lit, the University of South Wales and Goldsmiths, University of London. In 1987 he received an Eric Gregory Award and in 1992 won the National Poetry Competition. He is the author of five books of poetry – Flowering Limbs (Bloodaxe Books, 1993), a Poetry Book Society Choice, shortlisted for the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize and the T. S. Eliot Prize; Dream City Cinema (Bloodaxe Books, 1996), also shortlisted for the T. S. Eliot Prize; The Prince of Wails (CB editions, 2012); Drizzle Mizzle Downpour Deluge (CB editions, 2020); and, for younger readers, Sardines and Other Poems (Young Picador, 2005) – as well as two pamphlets written in a phonetic version of a Swansea accent: The Sandfields Baudelaire and A Swansea Love Song (both Poetry Business). His novel, Mr Schnitzel (Penguin, 2001), won the Arts Council of Wales Book of the Year in 2001. He has been a judge of several book awards including the T. S. Eliot Prize 2011.
