S. Eliot Prize video and audio archive spans four decades and is ever expanding. Each year, following the announcement of the T. S. Eliot Prize Shortlist, we invite the shortlisted poets to a filming session. We record an interview with each of them and ask them to read several poems from their collections.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Last year we also invited three past winners who we\u2019d previously failed to get into a studio: <a href=\"https:\/\/tseliot.com\/prize\/person\/hugo-williams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Hugo Williams<\/strong><\/a>, who won the T. S. Eliot Prize 1999 for <em>Billy\u2019s Rain<\/em> (Faber &amp; Faber); <a href=\"https:\/\/tseliot.com\/prize\/person\/george-szirtes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>George Szirtes<\/strong><\/a>, who was awarded the 2004 prize for <em>Reel<\/em> (Bloodaxe Books); and <a href=\"https:\/\/tseliot.com\/prize\/person\/sarah-howe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Sarah Howe<\/strong><\/a>, who won the Prize in 2015 for <em>Loop of Jade<\/em> (Chatto &amp; Windus).<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=e7udPuluw9U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In his interview, Hugo Williams ponders<\/a><\/strong> the paradoxical nature of poetry and his lifelong addiction to it. \u2018What you do in poetry is not express yourself. What you do is [\u2026] you invent and you find out things you didn\u2019t know already. That is the main addiction.\u2019 You can watch his interview in full and hear his moving readings of three poems from <em>Billy\u2019s Rain<\/em>: \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fmA1iBbIslc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Silver Paper Men<\/a>\u2019, \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HjqqYU58I90\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mirror History<\/a>\u2019 and \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=g4Tc93cKihM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Her News<\/a>\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=13bBNkkIGbs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>For George Szirtes the core of his collection <em>Reel<\/em> <\/strong><\/a>is the sequence \u2018Flesh\u2019: \u2018twenty-five terza rima poems about growing up as a child in Budapest, which I left at the age of eight, at the time of the revolution there. And they are the earliest memories that I have, which I had never articulated before\u2019. He reads three powerful poems from <em>Reel<\/em>: &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UHSjE3A_LIE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">My father carries me across a field<\/a>\u2019, \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vqT7CDS6Xic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sweet<\/a>\u2019 and \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YW99wmkKJ6s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meeting Austerlitz<\/a>\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Mulling on the ten years that has elapsed since <em>Loop of Jade<\/em> came out, ahead of the publication of her second collection <em>Foretokens<\/em> (to be published this October), <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1-ShuXnfBKk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sarah Howe says<\/a><\/strong>: \u2018I don\u2019t really make poems in the same way anymore. The work is maybe more direct, but also therefore more vulnerably unguarded.\u2019 She adds: \u2018I feel completely floored and honoured to have been the first woman of colour to win the Eliot Prize. And that milestone means a lot to me and maybe to other people too.\u2019 Sarah reads her remarkable poems \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sR8lLD0hG2k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stray Dogs<\/a>\u2019, \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OTIn3JyxeLI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Crocodile<\/a>\u2019 and \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eXQ2bYbGPZ8&amp;list=PL8VHSOl9gbqlaP6C0LrQzEKnPiCxAehuC&amp;index=4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Others<\/a>\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>These latest videos are a wonderful addition to the living archive of recordings we\u2019ve gathered over the past four decades.
