Other books include two bestselling memoirs, A<i>nd When Did You Last See Your Father?<\/i> (made into a film with Jim Broadbent and Colin Firth) and <i>Things My Mother Never Told Me<\/i>; two opera libretti and several song sequences, written for the composer Gavin Bryars; a children\u2019s book, <i>The Yellow House<\/i>; a study of the James Bulger murder case,<i> As If<\/i>; collection of essays and stories, <i>Too True<\/i>; the poetry collections <i>Dark Glasses<\/i>, <i>The Ballad of the Yorkshire Ripper and Shingle Street<\/i>; and four novels, including <i>The Last Weekend<\/i> (which was dramatised for television).<\/p>\n<p>His play adaptations for Northern Broadsides include <i>The Cracked Poet<\/i>, <i>Lisa\u2019s Sex Strike<\/i> and <i>We Are Three Sisters.<\/i> He has won various awards, including the Eric Gregory, EM Forster and JR Ackerley prizes. His latest memoir, <i>Two Sisters<\/i>, came out in 2023 along with the poetry pamphlets <i>Skin &amp; Blister<\/i> and <i>Never the Right Time<\/i>.
