He worked in the Arts Council of Northern Ireland from 1975 to 1998, with responsibility for Traditional Music, and, more latterly, Literature. In October 2003 he was appointed Professor of Poetry and Director of the Seamus Heaney Centre at Queen\u2019s University, Belfast.<\/p>\n<p>He is the author of fourteen\u00a0collections of poems, including <em>The Irish for No<\/em>, <em>Belfast Confetti<\/em>, <em>The Twelfth of Never<\/em>, <em>First Language<\/em>\u00a0(winner of the inaugural T. S. Eliot Prize 1993), <em>Opera Et Cetera<\/em>, <em>The New Estate and Other Poems<\/em> (1988),\u00a0<em>Breaking News<\/em> (Forward Prize for Best Collection 2003), <em>For All We Know<\/em> (Poetry Book Society Choice; shortlisted for T. S. Eliot Prize 2008), <em>Collected Poems<\/em> (2008), <em>On the Night Watc<\/em>h (2009) and <em>Until Before After<\/em> (2010). His translations include <em>The Alexandrine Plan<\/em>, <em>The Midnight Court<\/em>, <em>The Inferno of Dante Aligheri<\/em>, <em>The T\u00e1in<\/em>, <em>In the Light Of<\/em> (2012) and <em>From Elsewhere<\/em> (2014). <em>From There to Here<\/em> <em>(Selected Poems and Translations)<\/em> was published on the occasion of his 70th birthday (October 2018) and <em>Still Life<\/em> on 16 October 2019. His <em>Collected Poems<\/em> was originally published in 2008 and reissued in 2023 as <em>Collected Poems: Volume One<\/em> along with <em>Collected Poems: Volume Two<\/em>, which incorporates Ciaran Carson\u2019s later poems.<\/p>\n<p>Ciaran Carson also authored five prose books: <em>Last Night\u2019s Fun<\/em>, a book about traditional music; <em>The Star Factory<\/em>, a memoir of Belfast; <em>Fishing for Amber<\/em>: <em>A Long Story<\/em>; <em>Shamrock Tea<\/em>, a novel, which was longlisted for the Booker Prize and <em>The Pen Friend<\/em> (a novel). He has won several literary awards, including the <em>Irish Times<\/em> Irish Literature Prize. Ciaran Carson\u2019s translation of Dante\u2019s <em>Inferno<\/em> (2002) was awarded the Oxford Weidenfeld Translation Prize, and in 2003 he was made an honorary member of the Irish Translators\u2019 and Interpreters\u2019 Association.
