Eliot Foundation are pleased to announce that\u00a0Daniel Schonning\u00a0is the winner of the 2026 Four Quartets Prize for his collection\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/11580\/9780226843841\">As When Waking<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(University of Chicago Press, 2025).<\/p>\n<p>Selected by judges\u200b\u00a0Paisley Rekdal,\u200b\u00a0Charif Shanahan, and\u00a0Brian Teare.<\/p>\n<p>The judges also selected\u00a0Juliana Spahr\u00a0for \u201cscotch broom\u201d from\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/11580\/9780819501523\">Ars Poeticas<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(Wesleyan University Press, 2025) and\u00a0Annie Wenstrup\u00a0for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/11580\/9780819501820\"><em>The Museum of Unnatural Histories<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(Wesleyan University Press, 2025) as finalists for the prize.<\/p>\n<p>Schonning will receive $20,000, and each finalist will receive $1,000.<\/p>\n<p>The Four Quartets Prize\u2014which was launched in 2018, on the 75th anniversary of the publication of T. S. Eliot\u2019s\u00a0<em>Four Quartets<\/em>\u00a0in a single volume in America, in 1943\u2014is a celebration of the multipart poem, and is awarded for a unified and complete sequence of poems published in America in a print or online journal, chapbook, or book in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>From the judges&#8217; citation, Four Quartets Prize winner:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8216;Daniel Schonning\u2019s book takes the conceit of\u00a0<em>sequence<\/em>\u00a0literally and deploys it with the apparent ease of a virtuoso. To wit: the alphabet is a sequence, and the abecedarian a formal constraint, a twenty-six line poem that enjoins the poet to begin each line with a, b, c, etc., in order until the alphabet\u2019s been spelled out.<\/p>\n<p>Schonning\u2019s skill transforms the abecedarian catalog into an ever-expanding enumeration of the world\u2019s mysteries, leaving readers with the miraculous feeling that our hurt world has been restored by a lover of the real and of the good.&#8217;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The full citation on the Four Quartets Prize winner and biographies of the finalists can be found on the Poetry Society of America\u2019s website <a href=\"https:\/\/poetrysociety.org\/about\/news\/2026-four-quartets-prize\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Poetry Society of America and the T.
